Last weekend me and my girlfriend went to visit her grandparents, funny start to a blog post i know. Anyway her grandparents were looking for a cleaner to help them around the house. They are both in their mid 80s now and can't do as much as in days gone by. They were recommended a cleaning company in the local area, but they were only given the company's name and Grandad wanted to call them, a quick search on Google should have found the company's website and the contact details would be on there. The website didn't exist, they only had a Facebook page which you had to log on to in order to view the page. Grandad being 87 unsurprisingly isn't on Facebook.
This got me thinking about websites in general and how many small business' don't have one, lots of companies seem to prefer to go down the route of social media to advertise their services. Some do it along side their bricks and mortar set up and others run their business solely through Facebook and Twitter etc.
So i decided to do a blog post on why websites are important and why they definitely shouldnt be overlooked by a company of any size. Hopefully someone out there will find this post a useful tool in decided whether their business requires a website.
Here are my top 3 reasons as to why having a website is important.
1. Being Accessible
This has to be the first point given the information i gave you at the start of this post, luckily for Grandad and the cleaning company i have Facebook and i logged on and got the details and now the house is looking spotless.
However this won't always be the case. As a company you have to think about accessibility. Not everyone who would buy your products or services can get to you if you are a brick and mortar establishment and not everyone (especially the older generation) are on the social media sites that your business is based on.
Having a website gives you a level of online accessibility that will be vital for people who want to see your company and what it has to offer. The most popular way someone will find your company is through a search engine like Google, a quick name search should bring up everything Google can find about your business.
As you can see a quick search for Visinatus brings up all of our company's information and right at the top in pride of place is our website. It will be the first place any potential client will look to see the services we offer.
The other point to make about accessibility is the website itself. You will be open 24/7 365 days a year, rather than a shop that closes every day a customer will be able to purchase your products or services any time they want meaning your business can make money even as you sleep.
Another important reason to have a website is convenience. 92% of the UK have access to the internet and online shopping now makes up for a staggering 35% of purchases made in the UK.
Think about it, would you rather search around your local shopping centre for 4 hours trying to look for a product or service that may or may not be there. Having to deal with other shoppers getting in your way or the large Que that comes when you finally find what you want? Or would you rather sit in the comfort of your own home find the website that has the products you want and then sit back and relax in the knowledge that the product will be delivered to your door?
Convenience is a massive reason that people shop online and if your company doesn't have a website you have closed yourself off from a massive chunk of your potential customer base.
3. Customer Base/Increase Sales
If your company is a bricks and mortar establishment you could be missing out on a much larger consumer base. A website isn't limited to your surrounding area it can be regional, national and even worldwide. If you don't necessarily want to sell online a website can still make all the difference in attracting customers from further afield, you will be surprised how far people will travel to get a good quality service or product.
If you are looking to expand your consumer base or even want to increase your local sales reach, then a website is going to be vital for this. Statistics suggest that having a website and being seen on search engines such as Google can increase a chance of making a sale locally. According to wordstream 72% of people who did a local search visited a store within 5 miles and 55% of these made a purchase upon arrival.
On a larger scale having a website will get you seen on Google worldwide (if your SEO is done right) in 2016 Google announced that over 100 billion searches are made on the website every month. That is a huge amount and having a website gives you an 83% higher chance of having a slice of this pie according to Backlinko.
